Transfat is responsible for 4.41% of cardiac patient deaths in Bangladesh each year. Bangladesh is also on the list of the 15 countries most at risk of death due to heart disease from trans fat. A report from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday night revealed this information.
The four countries on the list, the United States, Canada, Latvia and Slovenia, are already following the World Health Organization’s policy on eliminating trans fats. WHO called on the remaining 11 countries to take immediate action. The other 11 countries on the list, including Bangladesh, are Iran, India, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Korea, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, and Ecuador.
According to the World Health Organization, a total of 57 countries have adopted a trans fat elimination policy so far, which will protect 3.2 billion people by 2021. However, due to lack of policies, hundreds of countries are still running the risk of getting trans fats.
Dr. Director-General of WHO on the occasion of the publication of this world report. “All measures must be taken to tackle NCDs in the Corona epidemic,” said Tedros Adhanom Gabrieusus. Because in the coronavirus, these can be accelerated and cause premature death.
Meanwhile, research at the National Research Institute and National Heart Foundation Hospital found that more than 2 percent of the trans fats (trans fatty acids) recommended by the WHO were found in 92 percent of the samples of Top brands of PHO (Partially Hydrogenated Oil) from Dhaka. In that study, the PHO sample from Dhaka was analyzed and a maximum of 20.9 grams of trans fat was found in every 100 grams of PHO sample. For this reason, the research and promotion organization Pragya (Knowledge for Progress) has demanded to establish the maximum limit of trans fats in all types of fats, oils and foods in the shortest possible time.
