According to official data from Bangladesh, the highest number of suicides in the country occurs in the southwestern district of Jhenaidah. Most of those who commit suicide are young people and women. Officials said several initiatives are being taken in Jhenaidah to curb the trend of public and private suicides.
In Jhenaidah, several local voluntary and non-governmental organizations work to prevent suicide, including the Sova Voluntary Activities Society.
Zahidul Islam, the company’s chief executive, says that an average of 400 people commit suicide in Jhenaidah each year.
From 2010 to 2016, 3,152 people committed suicide in the district. At this time 22 thousand 85 people have tried to commit suicide.
A total of 120 people have committed suicide in Jhenaidah in the six months from January to June this year. “On average, a person commits suicide every day in this district for at least a decade,” says Zahidul Islam.
According to the World Health Organization, eight million people around the world commit suicide each year. The death rate is 18 per lakh. Local studies have shown that the suicide rate in Bangladesh is 8-10 people per lakh, which is close to developed countries. Sovar Chief Executive Islam said the rate in Jhenaidah was about 21 per 100,000 residents.
“Most of the suicides have been committed by drinking pesticides or by hanging himself,” he said.
Why more suicides in Jhenaidah?
No government or private study has been done on why the suicide rate is high in this district. However, Dr. Jhenaidah Civil Surgeon. Selina Begum said that most of the people who committed suicide in the district were women and young children.
He said the highest number of suicides occurred in Shailkupa upazila in Jhenaidah.
But there are no official studies on why so many people choose the path of suicide. Selina Begum said: ‘We don’t have any surveys, but what I understand from my work experience is that there are a lot of family disputes here. Furthermore, young children commit suicide due to petty arrogance at the family level.
However, Sovar’s executive director Islam cited different reasons for the high suicide rate in the district.
“Among the southern districts, Jhenaidah has the fewest number of natural disasters, not even Sidr or Aila,” he said.
‘It means less complexity of life here. This is why people are more emotional and have less control over emotions.
He thinks that this is why these types of incidents occur more frequently. According to the government of Bangladesh, around 11,000 people commit suicide every year across the country. But it is based on the accounts of the police and various voluntary organizations.
It is not yet known exactly how many people commit suicide in the country each year.
For the first time, the Institute of Mental Health has conducted a survey, but the results have not yet been released, authorities said.
What do the experts say?
Mekhla Sarkar, associate professor at the National Institute of Mental Health, says research needs to be done on why suicide rates are so high in Jhenaidah.
“There must be a detailed discussion of what geographic, climatic, genetic, economic or cultural factors have worked behind this.”
He thinks that the mental health situation is usually the main driver behind suicide. “Someone’s genes can have a subject of depression or emotional instability. It is very important that a person has examples of suicide in his family or around him when he is growing up.
What is the remedy?
However, officials say that all government agencies in Jhenaidah have taken some steps to raise awareness and prevent suicide. But due to the coronavirus epidemic, much of that work has stalled.
However, experts believe that the family and society must bear the primary responsibility for preventing suicide as a whole.
Mekhla Sarkar, an associate professor at the National Institute of Mental Health, says that families must take the initiative, but they must also be aware of their own behavior and reactions.
Talk about some steps:
* Communication with the smallest members of the family should be greatly increased, they should try to understand
* Children should have more opportunities to play sports and socialize.
* Teach the child to deal with stress, not to pressure him with studies or sports
* You have to learn to accept failure yourself, you have to teach the child too. Failure is part of life to understand
* Do not reprimand or insult them, do not always hurt or criticize them, do not compare them with others of the same age
* Sensitize family, friends and close relatives.
