The Copyright Office said in a decision on June 14 that Sheikh Abdul Hakim is the author of 260 books in the ‘Masud Rana’ series and 50 books in the ‘Fog’ series.

Despite losing ownership of most of the books, the character remains in the possession of Kazi Anwar Hossain as the creator of the ‘Masud Rana’ series, said Zafar Raja Chowdhury, a registrar for the copyright office at the time.

Lawyer Hamidul Misbah said: “Since the copyright office rendered the verdict out of jurisdiction, the request for the brief was contested. After the hearing, the Superior Court stayed the verdict for a month and issued a rule. “

As a result of the High Court order, the publication and ownership of 260 books in the ‘Masud Rana’ series and 50 books in the ‘Fog’ series remain with Seva Publishing for the time being, attorney Misbah said.

Kazi Anwar Hossain, son of Professor Kazi Motahar Hossain, founded Seba Prakashani in 1986 and started writing the series ‘Masud Rana’; It quickly gained great popularity.

Later, Kazi Anwar Hossain used to write ‘Masud Rana’ with others for a fee. Sheikh Abdul Hakim is also among them.

However, Kazi Anwar Hossain used to publish the writings of others in his own name for marketing reasons.

Although there were no objections at first, Sheikh Abdul Hakim accused Kazi Anwar Hossain of violating sections 61 and 69 of the Copyright Act in 2010, claiming ownership of 270 books in the Masud Rana series.

He filed a complaint with the Copyright Office on July 29 of last year, as the complaint had not been resolved in nine years.

The copyright office said it had found evidence of violations of sections 71 and 69 of the Copyright Act against Kazi Anwar Hossain in light of three rounds of hearings, counterarguments from both parties and third party statements. On this basis, ownership of those books was transferred to Abdul Hakim.
