His disguise has no end. Nur Nazma Akhter, aka Lupa Talukder, 42, who was arrested for abducting nine-year-old Zinnia from the Dhaka University area, claimed she was a journalist for various media outlets.
His Facebook profile says that he is a political leader, emerging poet and works for an NGO. Some of her photos taken with the leaders of the ruling party can be seen on social media.
Investigators say he kidnapped Zinnia out of greed for money. It is being investigated if the looper has any contact with any traffic network.
Police rescued Zinnia from Narayanganj on Sunday night and arrested Lupa from the Amtala area of Fatullah in the city. Lupa is now in pre-trial detention for two days in a kidnapping case brought to the Shahbagh police station.
Mishu Biswas, ADC of the Ramna Division of the police, told The Daily Star that Looper has a criminal record. He was once charged with a triple murder case. There were also allegations of fraud against him.
Zinnia used to sell flowers in the TSC area of Dhaka University. He was kidnapped on September 1.
Xenia lives in the TSC area with her mother and two brothers. After Zinnia disappeared, her mother, Senura Begum, told the media that she last saw her daughter speaking with two women near Suhrawardy Udyan.
According to Looper’s Facebook profile, he is Managing Director of Agni TV, General Secretary of the Awami Professional League of Bangladesh, and former Secretary of Student Affairs of the Chhatra League of Bangladesh.
He claimed to be a high-level crime reporter for various newspapers, online portals, and television channels. He was also a member of the Federal Union of Journalists of Bangladesh and the Trade Union of Dhaka.
According to his Facebook profile, he is receiving the 2019 Cyclone Preparedness Program (CPP) Award from the Ministry of Disaster Management and Assistance.
On social media, many have criticized his connections to the ruling party and the journalists’ association.
Police said Lupa could not yet prove the truth of what he said about his profession.
ADC Mishu Biswas said: “He claimed he was a member of the press club but was unable to provide any proof. He only gave Mohana TV a business card. He claims that he has worked at Mohana TV once. Also, he was unable to show anything else. .
He further said that Lupa had told investigating officers that he was a former leader of the Chhatra League and that he is currently in the Professional League.
Lupa told officials about the kidnapping that he took her home out of sympathy for Zinnia. However, the idea of the police, its true purpose, may be something different.
Mahbub Alam, joint commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police intelligence branch, told The Daily Star that officials were investigating whether he had any links to child traffickers.
Lupa posted a photo of her with the ruling party leader, the minister, and her poem on the Facebook page, which has 10,000 followers.
