Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for concerted global action to ensure a safe environment for students.
The Prime Minister made the call on the International Day to Protect Education from Attacks for the first time on Wednesday (September 9) evening.
In a video message posted earlier on the occasion, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said: “The Covid-19 crisis has demonstrated the weakness of our existing education system.” The current crisis calls for concerted global action to ensure a safe environment for students.
Emphasizing the joint efforts of all, Sheikh Hasina said: “Let us commit to greater international cooperation to ensure education in all situations.” Everyone’s combined efforts will surely lead us to seek the future.
Referring to the devastating damage to the education sector in Corona, he said that the ongoing Kovid-19 epidemic has also severely damaged an important sector such as education. Due to this crisis, educational institutions around the world are closed.
Highlighting various initiatives by the Bangladeshi government to bring the light of education to students even in the Corona situation, the prime minister said that the government has not been lazy even though educational institutions in Bangladesh were closed due to the Corona crisis. Online education and television programs have been organized for students. Special measures have been taken to keep students involved in their studies.
He also mentioned that the government will continue to provide financial assistance to students.
Bangabandhu Kanya, mentioning that the Awami League government attaches the utmost importance to education, said that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used to place more importance on education by considering education as an important weapon in the development of the country. Following the philosophy of the father of the nation, the government has been investing more in education.
In this context, the Prime Minister highlighted various government initiatives to ensure education for all, improve the quality of education, ensure a safe environment for all students, including children and children with special needs.
On January 1, 2020 alone, 353 million textbooks were distributed for free, and since 2010, free textbooks have been provided to a sufficient number of high school students, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said three times in a row.
He also mentioned the need to provide stipends to 20.3 million students up to the upper secondary level and to guarantee unpaid education for students up to the upper secondary level.
Apart from these measures, gender-sensitive approaches, school feeding programs, establishment of primary schools in almost all villages and districts, various initiatives such as ICT education have brought three-dimensional benefits and results in expanding education, he said.
The Prime Minister highlighted several measures taken by the government to modernize madrassa education.
