7 dead in traffic accident in Barisal

At least 6 ambulance passengers were killed and 10 others injured in a three-way collision between a covered van and a bus on the Barisal-Dhaka highway in Atipara in Uzirpur upazila in Barisal.

The accident took place around 4 p.m. on Wednesday (September 9). Among the dead were 4 men and 2 women.

The deceased were identified as Arif Hossain and his wife Shiuli Begum, a resident of the Baukathi area in Jhalokati, Arif’s mother, Kahinur Begum, brother Qayyum Hossain and the ambulance driver Alamgir Hossain from Comilla and an unidentified young man.

Police said the unidentified young man was an accomplice of the murdered ambulance driver.

According to police and eyewitness sources, three-day-old Tamanna and her father Arif were heading home from Dhaka with their relatives by ambulance to Baukathi village. When the ambulance reached the Atipara area of ​​the Dhaka-Barisal highway, it collided head-on with an oncoming covered van. At that moment, when a bus collided with force, all three vehicles were twisted. Five ambulance passengers were rescued at the scene and one in critical condition was taken to the local health complex where he died overnight. After the confrontation, the Dhaka-Barisal highway was closed for an hour.

Model Wazirpur OC Ziaul Ahsan Police Station said the bodies of the deceased were recovered and turned over to the Highway Police. In addition, three vehicles were removed from the road and taken into police custody. However, it was not possible to arrest anyone involved in the incident.
