Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called on the education sector to take concerted global action to ensure a safe environment for students during the current coronavirus crisis, citing one of the most important areas deeply affected by Kavid-19.

This was said in a video message on the occasion of the ‘International Day to Protect Education from Attacks’ on the virtual platform for the first time on Wednesday.
The day is celebrated to shed light on the issue of attacks on education and to help more marginalized children and youth in conflict-affected countries to access quality education.
In his recorded message, Sheikh Hasina at the same time emphasized rebuilding international cooperation to safeguard education in all circumstances, and said that joint efforts should lead different countries towards the desired future.

The Prime Minister said that although the CWID-19 crisis has demonstrated the weakness of the existing education system, Bangladesh has taken several steps to overcome the effects of the epidemic on the education sector.
“Although the educational institutions were closed, we did not stand still,” he said. We have introduced broadcast and online teaching for students. The government has continued to provide financial assistance to students and, on the other hand, special measures have been taken to keep students engaged in their studies. A large investment has been made in this area as the government has placed greater emphasis on the education system.
He said our nation’s father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman prioritized education as an important tool for the country’s development. Guided by his vision, we have invested heavily in education.
In this context, Sheikh Hasina highlighted the various measures taken by his government to improve education and create a safe environment for all students, including children with special needs.
He said the government has been distributing free textbooks to students up to the secondary level since 2010 and providing stipends to 20.3 million students up to the higher education level. Apart from this, girls’ education up to upper secondary level has been made free.
The prime minister said that more than 26,193 primary schools and 85 secondary schools have been nationalized, and 4,361 educational institutions have been included in the Monthly Salary Order (MPO).
Sheikh Hasina said that gender-sensitive approaches, school feeding programs, establishing primary schools in almost all villages and districts, ICT education and other activities are showing clear benefits. As a result, the actual student enrollment rate in 2019 has increased to 98.64 percent and the literacy rate to 74 percent. The government has also taken steps to modernize madrassa education.
