The National Revenue Board (NBR) has decided not to hold fairs to avoid public gatherings due to health risks due to the coronavirus epidemic.
The decision was made at a meeting of the NBR on Wednesday, NBR (tax administration) member Arifa Shahana told bdnews24.com.
He said: “This time there is no tax fair being organized because of Kovid-19. However, arrangements will be made in the field tax offices for taxpayers to obtain equitable facilities ”.
NBR has been organizing tax fairs since 2010. The first tax fair was held in the capital, Dhaka, and Chittagong that year. Since then, the scope of the fair has increased every year. Besides Dhaka and Chittagong, NBR has been organizing tax fairs in all cities and divisional and upazilas districts.
The week-long fair runs from November 14 to November 20 in all divisional cities of the country, including the capital. The fair takes place at the facilities of the Officers Club on Bailey Road in the capital.
In addition, the fairs are held for four days in all the municipalities of the district and two days in 48 upazilas. At the upazila level, the fairs are held one day in growth centers where economic activities are good.
Last time 8 lakh 55 thousand taxpayers filed their returns at the tax fair.
Ordinary taxpayers await the tax fair. You can go to the tax fair and pay the annual income tax as well as pay the tax without any problem. In the last 10 years, tax fairs have become very popular with taxpayers.
At the tax fair, taxpayers get various services, including tax identification number (TIN), filing of return forms, and bank booths for paying taxes.
Tax fairs have become popular with taxpayers in the last ten years, as all services are available under one roof. Large crowds of taxpayers can be seen at various tax fairs around the country, including the capital. Many taxpayers wait for the tax fair to go to the tax office to avoid harassment. This time their hopes are shattered.
According to the Income Tax Ordinance, the annual income tax return can be filed until November 30.
According to NBR tax officials, Bangladesh is the only tax fair in South Asia. Since the tax fair began a decade ago, there has been a great response from taxpayers. During the seven days that the capital’s tax fair lasts, large crowds have been seen since the morning.
A quarter of taxpayers who file returns each year go to the tax fair. Taxpayers are comfortable paying taxes at the fair.
Last year, 8 lakh 55,995 taxpayers filed their returns at the tax fair. The tax collection was 2,813 crore 46 lakh rupees.

The NBR honors the best contributors each year. This time it has also become uncertain. The best contributors may not be honored this time because of the coronavirus.
