The first verdict in the murder in police custody

Pallabi Police Deputy Inspector (SI) Zahidur Rahman Zahid, Deputy Deputy Inspector (ASI) Rashedul and Kamruzzaman Mintu and three others were sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder case of Ishtiaq Hossain Johnny. The court also sentenced two police sources Sumon and Rashed to seven years in prison. This is the first verdict in a case of death in police custody in the country. Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayesh approved the order on Wednesday. State attorney (PP) Tapas Kumar Pal confirmed the matter to NTV Online.
Tapas Kumar Pal said: “Although the defendants were brought to court during the verdict announcement this afternoon, they were not brought to court. The judge announced the verdict at noon.
Tapas Kumar Pal further said: “Former SI from Pallabi Police Station Zahidur Rahman Zahid, ASI Rashedul and Kamruzzaman Mintu have been sentenced to life imprisonment and fined one lakh rupee in this case. The court also ordered an additional six months in jail for failing to pay the fine.
Tapas Kumar Pal further said: “Police sources have also sentenced Sumon and Rashed to seven years in prison and have been fined 20,000 taka in this case.”
According to the file, on August 8, 2014, Imtiaz Hossain, the younger brother of the deceased, filed a complaint against eight people, including the Officer-in-Charge (CO) of the Pallabi Police Station Ziaur Rahman, alleging torture and death in custody in the court of the then Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Zahurul Haque. Later, the judge learned of the case and ordered a judicial investigation.
According to the instructions, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Maruf Hossain completed the investigation of the case. He subsequently submitted an investigative report to the Dhaka Metropolitan Court of Judges for Sessions on February 17, 2015, recommending the release of five defendants and the release of five others. During the investigation, Assistant Deputy Inspector of Police (ASI) Rashedul and Kamruzzaman Mintu were recently added as defendants.
The five defendants whose release was recommended are Pallabi Police Station OC Ziaur Rahman, SI Abdul Baten, Rashed and Shovon Kumar Saha and Officer Nazrul.
On the other hand, the five accused are the Pallabi Police Station SI Zahidur Rahman Zahid, ASI Rashedul and Kamruzzaman Mintu, Source Sumon and Rashed.
On July 13, 2015, Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Kamrul Hossain Mollah issued an arrest warrant for ASI Rashedul and Kamruzzaman Mintu from Pallabi Police Station and Sumon and Rashed, a police source.
According to the case file, on February 8, 2014, during a yellow ceremony on Johnny’s neighbor’s son, Sadeq in Mirpur Section 11, a Sumon police source treated the girls indecently during the ceremony. At that point, Johnny and his brother asked Sumon, a police source, to leave. Fuente Sumon left that day but came back the next day and started behaving as before. When Johnny and his brother asked him to leave again, the source called Sumon police and asked them to arrest him.
When the two brothers were taken away, the locals chased the police and the police started shooting.
Johnny and his brother were taken to the police station and tortured. Later the police released them. When Johnny’s condition worsened, he was admitted to the National Medical College Hospital. When his condition worsened, Johnny’s mother took him to Dhaka Medical College, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
