The Kewatkhali PGCD grid substation in Mymensingh has been shut down due to a fire. Although the fire was extinguished, the power supply to all districts of the Mymensingh division was cut off.

A transformer at the Kewatkhali substation was reported to have caught fire around 1pm today. Upon receiving the news, two units of the fire service worked to extinguish the fire. Then around 2pm the fire was brought under control.

Abul Hossain, deputy director of the Mymensingh Division Fire and Civil Defense Service, said: “Two units arrived at the scene as soon as they received the news. During this time 5 more units were prepared. However, both units were able to control the fire. The cause of the fire can be determined subject to investigation.

He also said that they initially thought the fire started from a short circuit.

PDB Mymensingh Region Chief Engineer Rafiqul Islam said: “There are three power transformers in the substation. A power transformer caught fire. It will take time to determine the cause or extent of the damage. An investigative committee has been formed in this regard. The utility company is investigating.

In addition, he said: “The power supply to the division’s Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur and Netrokona districts has been cut off due to this incident. It is not clear when the power supply will be normal.

However, I am investigating whether a partial power supply can be started in the city of Mymensingh, Rafiqul Islam said.
