During the Myanmar army’s clean-up operation against the Rohingya in Rakhine in 2016, soldiers were instructed to “shoot anyone they see.” Two Myanmar soldiers say this as they confess to the genocide and torture of Rohingya at the International Criminal Court (ICC). The international human rights organization Fortify Rights said in a statement on Tuesday (September 6).
The two soldiers who confessed before the International Criminal Court are Mio Win Tun, 33, and J Nayeng Tun, 30. In court, they confessed to killing innocent people, including women and children, burying people in mass graves and other crimes during the Myanmar army clean-up operation in 2016.
The statement said the confession led the two soldiers to plead guilty in court and act as witnesses in future cases. The ICC has different types of witness protection rules (Witness Protection) and under it protection is provided to all types of witnesses.
The soldiers mentioned the names of 19 people who directly committed such atrocities. They also said that six senior military officials had given instructions.
The ICC is investigating the Rohingya genocide.
According to the confession, only these two were involved in the murder of at least 160 Rohingya.
Mio Win Tun confesses: “Colonel Than Thai ordered the extermination of the Rohingya. The soldiers then shot the Muslims in the forehead and kicked them into the grave. Mio also admitted to destroying several villages in the Buthidong area, having been directly involved in the murder of 30 Rohingya, and indirectly involved in the murder of 60 to 70 other Rohingya.
“I was involved in the destruction of 20 villages and the murder of at least 60 people in Maungdaw Township,” said J. Nayeng Tun. In addition, Sergeant Paye Foye Aung and Kiyat Yu Pin raped three Rohingya women, of whom I am a witness.
