After 6 months at sea, 300 Rohingya settled in Indonesia

Dhaka: After six months at sea, some 300 Rohingya have settled on a beach in Indonesia’s Aceh province.

The country’s authorities announced the news on Monday (September 8).

Aceh province police say the Rohingya fled Myanmar in a wooden boat for fear of losing their lives. The boat was discovered by local fishermen in Aceh province, and the Rohingya landed on Ujung Balang Beach shortly after midnight. The number of Rohingya rescued on the beach is 298. Of these, 181 are women and 14 are children.

Junaidi Yahya, head of the local Red Cross committee, said the Rohingya had been placed in a temporary shelter.

According to Indonesian authorities, this is the largest Rohingya group ever to reach the country.

Previously, fishermen from Aceh province rescued more than 100 Rohingya last June. The group consisted of 49 women and 30 children. Previously, the Indonesian government threatened to repatriate the Rohingya.
