Like last year, there was instability in the onion market in September. Onion prices are also rising in the country market on the news of rising prices in the Indian market. From last Thursday until Monday, 45 kg of domestic onion are sold at between 75 and 80 rupees. The 30 kg imported onion is currently sold at 55 rupees. The result is panicky consumers. Many people buy more onions than they need. Onion prices have been going up since September last year. Many people have not forgotten the bitter experience of eating 300 kg of onion. However, the ministry is interested in learning from last year’s experience. The necessary steps have already been taken to deal with the situation. Also last Sunday a meeting was held about it. At the meeting, the Ministry of Commerce decided to sell onions at affordable prices through TCB to control the market. A decision has also been made to reschedule the tariff applied to importers of onions.
It was seen yesterday in the retail markets, including Mugda, Malibagh and Gopibagh, that many people are buying more onions than they need. Sellers said that many of them have informed them in advance. According to him, they have packed five to seven kg.
A man named Abdur Rahman, who came to buy onions at the Gopibagh market, said: “Our middle class problem; If the price goes up a bit, there is pressure on the budget. Meanwhile, the price of onion has risen 25 Tk per kg. What if one hundred and five hundred or two hundred rupees like last year! So I’m buying more. ‘
Rabiul, a vendor in the Maniknagar market, said: “The price of onion is increasing in the market. Many buyers buy more. Many ask for five to seven kg. We also have to bring more. ‘ Last year, the price of onion rose to Rs 300 per kg in the country. This situation occurred due to the cut off of the onion supply from India.
This time also the price of onion started to rise due to the increase in the price of Indian onion. Buyers are likely to call everyone who seems suitable, if there are only a few. However, traders say the new season onion will start to hit the market in India next October. As a result, there is no possibility of market volatility.
The task force committee met at the Ministry of Commerce last Sunday. A press release issued by the ministry on Monday said the country has sufficient onion stocks and imports are normal. As a result, there is no reason for the onion crisis or the price increase. Strict measures will be taken if an attempt is made to increase prices by creating illegal stocks or artificial crises.
When asked, TCB spokesperson Humayun Kabir told Kaler Kanth: “We sell products on the open market every month on the occasion of Corona. Sales will start this month starting next week. Common products such as oil, sugar, legumes and onions will also be sold.
