Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for the word “martial law” to be removed from the “military dictionary”. The Prime Minister made the call while attending a virtual meeting at the 2020 Armed Forces Selection Board Meeting from her official Ganobhaban residence here on Monday morning.
Sheikh Hasina said: “Martial law cannot bring any welfare to the country and the armed forces without bloodshed.” Therefore, we should remove the word “martial law” from the “military dictionary”.
Referring to the 19 coups by the military government of Ziaur Rahman, the prime minister said: “During the government of the military dictator Ziaur Rahman, so many officers and soldiers of the armed forces have died that not so many soldiers have died in the war.” We (in the armed forces) do not want to hear the cries of any more orphaned son or fatherless son ”.
The Prime Minister said: “After the massacre of August 15, 1975, the armed forces suffered the most from one coup after another. On behalf of these cousins, many members of the armed forces who participated in our great war of liberation were brutally murdered. There is more bloodshed in the army and air force and we have heard the cries of many widows and orphans. ‘
The Prime Minister reiterated that the objective of her government is to modernize the Armed Forces and make it timely. She added: “Members of our armed forces are respected members of our family. They are a symbol of our freedom and sovereignty. Our goal is to make this force more modern and up-to-date and we are working towards it.
In this context, the Prime Minister highlighted the various efforts made by his government. He said his government was working to better equip the armed forces for the protection of the country and hard-won independence and sovereignty.
