In all the by-elections for the five seats of the Jatiya Sangsad, the relatives of the deceased deputies wanted to compete for the Awami League. However, in all four seats except one, the nominees were known to oppose the deceased MPs.

Several central leaders of the ruling party told Kaler Kanth that the party’s policy makers have decided not to nominate family members because they are angry at their misdeeds and controversial activities. On average, after more than two decades, they think that with the change of candidates will come the internal balance of power in the Awami League bases and the family dominance will be reduced.

When asked, the member of the Awami League’s parliamentary board, Muhammad Farooq Khan, told Kaler Kanth: “The candidates have been finalized on the basis of acceptability, popularity, organizational participation and ability to carry out responsibilities.” Another issue that has come to light this time is whether there are complaints of irregularities against the candidate.

On condition of anonymity, a member of the Awami League’s parliamentary board told Kaler Kantha: The candidates have been nominated on the basis of intelligence information. After a long time, the center of power is going to change in a few seats.

Member of the Parliamentary Board of the Awami League and Minister of Agriculture. Abdur Razzak also spoke almost in the same tone. He said: ‘Being a member of the family is not a qualification or a disqualification. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has made it clear that if any member of her family is involved in wrongdoing, there is no reason for her to be exempted. She said that more importance has been given to allegations of irregularities in the selection of candidates in all by-elections.

Recently, the Election Commission has announced by-elections in Dhaka-5, Dhaka-17, Sirajganj-1, Pabna-4 and Naogaon-6. The candidates for these seats were finalized at a meeting of the Awami League parliamentary board. Among them, Kazi Monirul Islam Manu, Nuruzzaman Biswas and Anwar Hossain Helal have been declared candidates for the electoral districts of Dhaka-5, Pabna-4 and Naogaon-6, respectively. Although the candidates for the remaining Dhaka-17 and Sirajganj-1 have not been declared, the nomination has been finalized, several leaders of the Awami League’s parliamentary board said. They are Habib Hasan and Tanvir Shakil Joy respectively.

The late Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu was a candidate for the Awami League in the Pabna-4 (Ishwardi) constituency for 24 consecutive years since 1996. The seat was vacated when he died on April 2. The vice president of the Pabna District Awami League and the president of Ishwardi upazila, Nuruzzaman Biswas, have been nominated for the position. He was in the role of anti-Dilubi for several years; Although eight family members, including Dilu’s wife, son and daughter, wanted the nomination.

Sources said that Dilu’s family members were not nominated due to their controversial activities and family disputes. The struggle for power between them has been going on for a long time. During Dilu’s life, the media reported on multiple disputes between the daughter’s son and son-in-law.

At a press conference a few days ago, Mehjabin Shirin Pia, Dilu’s daughter, said: “Although my mother, my brother and my husband await nominations, I have been active in politics for 26 years hand in hand with my father.” Now, if someone in the family wants to be nominated, it will be unfair ”.

Dilu’s son, Shirhan Sharif Tamal, was the president of the Ishwardi Upazila Juba League. He was expelled from the organization for various controversial activities. He is accused of beating people of different classes and professions, including party leaders and activists, at different times. He also went to jail in one case. He is also charged with beating and wounding four journalists on November 29, 2016 in Rooppur in Ishwardi.

Israfil Alam has been elected Member of Parliament for the Naogaon-6 constituency three times since 2008. Raninagar President Upazila Parishad Anwar Hossain Helal has been nominated in the by-election of this constituency that was vacated after his death; However, Sultana Parveen, Israfil Alam’s wife, wanted to be nominated in these by-elections.

Helal contested upazila’s last election as an independent against the Awami League candidate and won by a large margin. The district committee recommended that Helal be removed from the raninagar Upazila Awami League vice president for voting against the ship’s symbol. He had a strong dispute with Israfil Alam. Anwar Hossain Helal told Kaler Kanth: ‘I don’t want to think about all those old things anymore. If I am elected, I will go ahead with the late Member of Parliament’s job.

Habibur Rahman Mollah has been nominated by the Awami League for five consecutive terms in the Dhaka-5 constituency comprising part of the capital’s Jatrabari, Demra and Kadamtali police stations. He won four times. Jatrabari League President Thana Awami, Kazi Monirul Islam Manu, known as the opponent of the Mollah family, has been nominated for the post that was vacated after his death. Mashiur Rahman Mollah, son of the late Demra League deputy and general secretary Thana Awami, was seeking the seat. However, sources from the Awami League said that Manu was nominated to evaluate the cornered leaders due to the Mollah family’s long-standing dominance.

According to sources, Awami League candidate Habib Hasan, who was a finalist in the Dhaka-17 constituency, was once close to the late MP Sahara Khatun, but they had been at odds for some time. Although 56 people, including Sahara Khatun’s nephew, bought nomination forms for the seat, in the end they did not get the nomination.

Tanvir Shakil Joy, son of the late MP Mohammad Nasim, will be nominated only in the Sirajganj-1 constituency. Joy, a former vice president of the Swechchhasebak League, was also elected to the seat in the 2008 elections.
