India has tested a hypersonic missile amid continuing tensions with China over the Ladakh border. The country claims that as a result of its successful test, it has become the fourth country in the world after the United States, Russia and China to fly this missile at a speed greater than the speed of sound.

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the ‘Hypersonic Technology Demonstration Vehicle’ was tested at the APJ Abdul Kalam Proving Ground in the Balasar Hills area of Orissa at 11:03 am on Monday.

India says the missile fired six times faster than the sound. The missile was tested with a firing missile booster. That test was completed in five minutes.

The hypersonic missile was developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). This successful test is being hailed as an important step in strengthening the defense system built on indigenous technology.

The report further said that DRDO will be able to develop hypersonic missiles with Scramjet engines in the next five years. It can cover up to two kilometers in one second. The missile was tested the same day under the leadership of DRDO chief Satish Reddy. All parameters were correct.

After the successful test, the Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO.
