Masterpiece of Faridganj, son of the great commander of the liberation sector, Lieutenant. Colonel (retired) Abu Osman Chowdhury died on Saturday (September 5) while receiving treatment at CMH Hospital in Dhaka (Innali — Rajeun). His personal assistant confirmed the death of Abul Bashar.
Abu Osman Chowdhury (65) served as Sector 7 Commander during the Liberation War and was Vice President of SCF.
This heroic freedom fighter suffered from various physical ailments for a long time. He was admitted to the Dhaka Combined Military Hospital at noon on August 30 after his condition worsened.
Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Abu Osman Chowdhury is a sector commander of the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was one of the members of the 101-member ‘Ekattarer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee’, made up of eminent intellectuals, politicians, journalists, poets, writers and cultural personalities of the country who believed in the spirit of the liberation war by summoning Shaheed Janani Jahanara Imam. He was currently the administrator of the Chandpur District Council.
Abu Osman Chowdhury was born on January 1, 1936 to the Chowdhury family of Madnergaon village under the Faridganj Police Station in Chandpur District. His father’s name is Abdul Aziz Chowdhury and his mother’s name is Majeda Khatun. He obtained his primary education at a free primary school in his Madanergaon village.
In 1945, he was admitted to the fifth class of Manikraj High School in a nearby town. Chandra Imam Ali passed SSC in first class in 1951 from high school and college. Later he got admission to HSC in the Science Department of Dhaka College. But due to active participation in language movement, physical illnesses, and various family problems, he was unable to complete HSC at Dhaka College. He later passed HSC from Chandpur Government College in 1954 and BA from Comilla Victoria College in 1956.

In 1956, Abu Osman was appointed “Airport Officer” at Dhaka Airport. While preparing for the post, he passed an examination for a commission in the army and was called up to appear in the intermilitary selection court. In January 1956, he joined the Officer Training School (OTS) in Kohat, then West Pakistan. After 9 months of training there, he was commissioned into the Pakistani Army on September 13, 1956. In April 1986, he was promoted to the rank of Major.
During the liberation war, Abu Osman Chowdhury was serving in Kushtia as a major in the Pakistani army. Upon receiving the news of Operation Searchlight, he arrived at the Chuadanga base at 11 am on March 26 and declared rebellion against the Pakistani Army and joined the War of Liberation. Subsequently, on April 10, 1971, the Bangladeshi government appointed him regional commander for the Southwest. In the last fortnight of May, the Commander-in-Chief, MAG Osmani, divided the Southwest Battlefield in two and formed Sectors 7 and 9, and Abu Osman was appointed in charge of Sector 7. Initially, the area of operations for that sector at that time were the districts of Kushtia, Jessore, Khulna, Barisal, Faridpur and Patuakhali. At the end of May, the area of operations was reduced to Kushtia and Jessore, the headquarters of the Khulna district, the Satkhira subdivision and the northern part of Faridpur. The head of this sector was Abu Osman Chowdhury.
