Of the 44 eggs laid by the saltwater crocodile Pilpil at the only wildlife breeding center in Sundarbans, only four have hatched this time.

The Karamjal Wildlife and Tourism Breeding Center official said the baby did not hatch as expected due to heavy rains and incubator failures. Azad Kabir.

Azad Kabir said: ‘On June 12, the Pilpil crocodile laid 44 eggs in the breeding center. The crocodile was then kept in its own home for 21 days and the rest were stored in 12 new incubators and 11 old incubators for hatching. After the specified time, the calf hatched from four of the 11 eggs kept in the center’s new incubator on Saturday morning. The rest of the eggs are spoiled. However, due to heavy rains and tidal flooding from the breeding center this season, other wildlife, including eggs, have been damaged. Last year, Pilpil laid 46 eggs, but not a single baby was born. It has not been possible to remove a baby from the Pilpil egg in the last three years. Today the total number of crocodiles in the breeding center is 197, including four hatched from Pilpil eggs.

Two female crocodiles named Pilpil and Juliet are breeding at the crocodile breeding center. Of these, Juliet laid 52 eggs on May 29, but none hatched.

Azad Kabir further said: “In 2020, Pilpil laid 44 eggs and Juliet laid 52 eggs. Although Pilpil had four babies, it was not possible to hatch from Juliet’s eggs. In 2016, 18 and 19, not a single baby was born from Pilpil and Juliet’s eggs.

For this reason, the breeding center official is blaming the crotch of the center’s incubator for not getting the right temperature in time.
