A helpless mother went to the police station to present a case alleging that her daughter had been murdered. But Rajshahi Charghat Police Officer in Charge (CO), Samit Kumar Kundu, has threatened to arrest the mother without filing a case.

Parul Begum from Tatarpur village in Charghat upazila filed a written complaint with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Rajshahi Police Superintendent on Wednesday.

According to the written complaint, 15 years ago, the Mostafa-Parul couple from the Tatarpur area of Charghat upazila married their daughter Arifa to Shahabul alias Sabar, son of Akbar Ali from the same area. After the marriage, her husband Shahabul used to torture Arifa physically and mentally. Shahabul claimed that Arifa committed suicide by hanging himself on the morning of August 26. Upon receiving the news, Charghat police went to the scene and recovered Arif’s body and sent him to the Rajshahi Medical College (RAMEC) morgue for autopsy. After the autopsy, Arif’s body was handed over to her in-laws around 2:30 p.m. the same day. The body was hastily buried at 5 p.m.

Arif’s mother, Parul Begum, alleged that before the police arrived at the scene, Shahabul, his father Akbar, his two brothers and his sister had unloaded Arif’s hanging body. Upon receiving the news, I ran to the place to see my daughter. Then I saw that there were signs of bloody wounds in different parts of my daughter’s body such as: chest, nose and ears. I suppose they tortured my daughter and forced her to commit suicide or they committed suicide and hanged her body.

Parul Begum further said: ‘My daughter-in-law is a notorious drug dealer in the Shahabul area and a man of a terrible nature. As soon as someone opened their mouth against him, he was handed over to the police with physical torture and drugs. It also dominates the area. The police did not arrest him despite having a warrant in his name.

Parul Begum further said: ‘Saying that my daughter has been killed, Shahabul along with his other associates Abul, Majeedul, Kalam, Kafil, Milon, Yunus and Moksedul came to my house and attacked me with the intention of killing me. At that moment I closed the door from inside the house and saved my life. They later left the place.

‘When I went to the Charghat police station to file a complaint about the death of my daughter, the CO of the police station told me:’ Your daughter has died. Why did you come to the police station to complain? Then the OC threatened to take me to the police station without presenting a case. In this situation I am suffering extreme insecurity. I am currently staying at the home of a close relative in Rajshahi city. Parul Begum reportedly requested the intervention of higher police authorities to carry out a proper investigation into the incident and to take legal action against the defendant Shahabul and other persons involved.

When asked about the fact that Parul Begum did not file a case and the drug trafficker Shahabul, Charghat OC Samit Kumar Kund Police Station said: “The charge of threatening to imprison the woman is unfounded.” However, Shahabul is a drug dealer. There is an arrest warrant against him. An attempt is being made to arrest him.

If you want to know about the accusations against OC Rajshahi, the Police Superintendent (SP) said. Shahidullah said: ‘I have not seen the complaint yet. Necessary steps will be taken in this regard after the visit. Furthermore, the safety of Parul Begum will be ensured.
