The Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has expressed satisfaction with a High Court ruling on the rights of Hindu widows in all kinds of property left by their husbands. Thursday’s statement read: “This positive verdict is a milestone in establishing the rights of Hindu widows in all their husbands’ properties.”

The statement further said: “The High Court’s ruling to guarantee the legal rights of the husbands of Hindu widows in this country is a positive judgment to advance on the path of empowerment and equality for women.” The verdict will also be a milestone in the future reform of Hindu law and the realization of other equal rights for women in the women’s movement.

For so long, only Hindu widows could have the right to their husband’s non-agricultural property. A High Court ruling on Wednesday said that from now on, Hindu widows will also get a share of her husband’s agricultural land. With this judgment of the High Court, the legal rights of Hindu widows in all kinds of property of their husbands were assured.

Mahila Parishad’s statement said: “It is important that the government ministry in question take the necessary steps to implement this positive judgment of the High Court.” In light of this verdict, there is a strong demand to enact laws that guarantee equal property rights for men, women and people of the third sex. The Mahila Parishad further demanded that, in the light of the Constitution, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the CEDAW Charter, the family law of Bangladesh be reformed so that a uniform family law be enacted.
