Among agricultural workers, 3,649 men committed suicide and 585 women. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have the highest suicide rates in agriculture. In particular, the NCRB has mentioned that no farmers have committed suicide in West Bengal.

According to the National Office of Criminal Records, the total number of suicides in the country is also alarming. According to statistics, the number of suicides in 2019 has increased a lot compared to 2016. In 2016, there were 1 lakh 34,518 suicides in the country. In 2019, that number has risen to 1 lakh 39,123 people. And in this case, the highest number of suicides is with a rope around the neck. Among suicides, 53.7 percent of people committed suicide with a rope around their neck in 2019. 25.7 percent of people have committed suicide by consuming poison. 5.2 percent of people have committed suicide by drowning.

Why so many suicides? Family distress is the most common cause of suicide. Family distress accounted for 32.4 percent of all suicides. 5.5 percent of people have committed suicide due to marital disturbances. 16.1 percent of people have committed suicide as a way to get rid of the disease.
