Uttam Kumar was born on September 3, 1926 in Calcutta. His real name is Arun Kumar Chatterjee. Father Satkari Chattopadhyay and mother Chapla Devi. He was the eldest of three brothers.

Uttam Kumar’s acting career began in 1948 with the movie ‘Drishtidan’. The name of his first movie as a hero is ‘Mayador’. Although this movie has not seen the light of day. However, Uttam Kumar caught everyone’s attention by acting in the movie ‘Basu Paribar’. He didn’t have to look back after starring in the movie ‘Seventy-four and a half’. He acted alongside Suchitra Sen for the first time in this movie. The Uttam-Suchitra duo started with ‘seventy-four and a half’. So this couple became the disputed couple with acting skills. Notable films of the Uttam-Suchitra duo are: Harano Sur, Pathe Hall Deri, Chawa Paawa, Bipasha, Jeevan Trishna Sagarika, and Saptapadi.

Uttam Kumar has acted in more than two hundred films. Notable films in which he has acted include Anthony Firingi, Nayak, Pathe Holo Deri, Agnipriksha, Saptapadi, Jhinder Bandi, Harano Sur, Sagarika, Putrabadhu, Champa Dangar Bau, Rai Kamal, Chowrangi, Nishipadma, Bon Palashir Padabuli, Ogori.

He played the role of Detective Byomkesh Boxer in ‘Nayak’ and ‘Zoo’ directed by Satyajit Ray.

Among the Hindi films in which he has acted are Amanush, Chhotisi Mulakat, Ananda Ashram.

Uttam Kumar loved music as well as acting. Music was part of his life. Uttam Kumar has also performed on his own songs. He sang a total of 6 songs to the tune of Nachiketa Ghosh in the film ‘Navajanma’ directed by Devaki Kumar Bose which was released on December 26, 1956. Two of these notable songs are ‘Kanu kahe rai, kahite dorai’ and ‘Ami angul katiya ‘.

Uttam Kumar won the National Award in 1989 for his performances in ‘Anthony Firingi’ and ‘Zoo’. At that time, this award was known as ‘Bharat’. In 1957, he received the President’s Certificate of Merit for his performance in Ajay Kar’s ‘Harano Sur.’

Uttam Kumar married Gauri Devi. His only son, Gautam Chatterjee, died of cancer at the age of 53. Gaurab Chatterjee is the only grandson of Uttam Kumar.

Uttam Kumar passed away on July 24, 1970. Uttam Kumar was with actress Supriya Devi for 18 long years until her death.
