On Thursday morning, several tweets were sent from that account requesting a grant to the Prime Minister’s Aid Fund via cryptocurrency.
Acknowledging that the account had been compromised, Twitter authorities said they had taken the necessary steps to secure the account.
A Twitter spokesperson said in a statement: “We are investigating the matter. However, we are still not sure if this has affected other accounts.”
However, there was no immediate reaction from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office, Reuters reported.
One of Modi’s accounts was similarly hacked in July after the Twitter accounts of the likes of US presidential candidate Joe Biden and tech billionaire Elon Musk were attacked.
The name of the Twitter account associated with Modi’s personal website is arenarendramodi_in. The number of followers of the account opened in 2011 is more than 25 lakh.
On Thursday morning, the hackers tweeted several times about owning the account. In one such tweet, Modi’s name read: “The Prime Minister makes a donation to the National Aid Fund for Kovid-19. The cryptocurrency is now introduced in India.
With that tweet an ID is provided to donate via Bitcoin.
Although those tweets were later removed after the account was restored, several screenshots are now circulating through social media.
