Low cost internet for students
Only state-owned mobile operator Teletalk has responded to requests for low-cost internet to maintain online and offline educational activities for public and private university students. Other mobile operators have yet to respond. After months of negotiations, Bidiren (Bangladesh Research and Education Network), an organization run by the University Grants Commission (UGC), sent a letter to all operating companies in July.
“We have asked mobile operators to provide low-cost internet,” said Mohammad Taurit, CEO of BDREN. I just received a reply from Teletalk. No one else responded.
Due to the Corona disaster, the education of college students practically came to a halt. Although several universities have decided to introduce classes online, students are not interested in this lesson due to the high cost of the Internet. For this reason, students do not participate in online classes.
According to the UGC, the government mobile operator Teletalk will provide Internet bandwidth at a nominal price. Students from all universities in the country that use the BDREN platform will obtain this facility. Currently, 42 public and 8 private universities are using the BDREN platform. Students will be able to participate in classes online through the Zoom app. To do this, students must be on the Teletalk network. This facility will be available for Rs 100 per monthly recharge. The reloaded money will be credited to your original account. This money can be spent on voice and data calls. Unused money will be added to the next recharge. However, this feature cannot be used if you recharge below Rs 100 and you have no minimum data on SIM.
The chairman of the University Scholarship Commission (UGC), Prof. Kazi Shahidullah said that the initiative to keep students online at the university level during the Corona epidemic is very timely. On the other hand, parents have called for low-cost Internet services to be provided to students of all levels in the country. They said that not only the university but also the school students should have this facility.
Ziaul Kabir Dulu, president of the parents forum, said that all kinds of educational institutions in the country were closed. So there is no option without online classes. Therefore, all students in the country should have low-cost or free Internet access.
