The body of a farmer named Rahmat Gazi (65) has been recovered from the head of a coconut tree in Abhaynagar in Jessore. A team of firefighters recovered his body from a coconut tree at his home in the Upazila village of Bhangaget Laxmipur on Wednesday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Rahmat Ghazi, son of the late Torap Ghazi from the village of Laxmipur.

Going to the scene, Rahmat Gazi is seen to be sitting unconscious on top of a coconut tree about 60 feet high. Hundreds of villagers are standing around the trees. Many screamed and called for Rahmat Ghazi, but he did not respond.

Speaking to Rehmat Gazi’s wife, Rizia Begum, she said her husband climbed into a coconut tree in front of the house around 12 noon on Wednesday. After climbing to the top of the tree, she dropped two coconuts. About half an hour later, she saw her husband sitting in a tree. She screamed and got no response, so she informed the neighbors. Her husband worked in agriculture and in coconut trees.

Meanwhile, a rescue team of firefighters arrived at the scene and began the rescue operation. After trying for about 40 minutes, they were able to rescue the old man from the top of the tree and knock him down.

Khan Ehsan-ul-Alam, an officer of the Nawapara Fire and Civil Defense Service Station, who was the head of the rescue team, told Kaler Kanth: “As soon as we found out, we ran to the scene.” With the help of team members, the elderly man was rescued unconscious and uninjured from the canopy of a coconut tree about 60 feet tall and was rushed to the Upazila Health Complex.

Hafiza Nargis, a doctor on duty at the emergency department of the Upazila Health Complex, said the man rescued from the coconut tree died of a heart attack. He died before reaching the hospital.
