The ministry has reported to the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Expatriate Welfare and Employment Abroad.
The committee recommended the rapid implementation of the initiative to send workers to these countries.
The issue was debated at a parliamentary committee meeting held in the parliament building on Tuesday.
According to a press release issued by the Parliament Secretariat, the meeting suggested that the diplomatic activities of Bangladeshi missions abroad be continued so that the expatriate labor market does not shrink.
According to the Ministry of Welfare for Expatriates and Employment Abroad, in the last four months alone, around 70,000 expatriates from around the world have returned or been repatriated.
However, BRAC, a non-governmental organization, estimates that the number of people stranded in the country before April could exceed three and a quarter million.
Meanwhile, the committee also suggested that appropriate measures be taken to ensure that Bangladeshi workers who lost their jobs due to the coronavirus epidemic can return to those countries in the future.
The committee was informed that medicine and relief items worth approximately Rs 11 million have been distributed through the labor welfare wing of the Bangladesh mission to unemployed and distressed expatriate workers.
The meeting was also informed that the Wage Earners’ Welfare Board has launched a project with World Bank funding for the “reintegration” of returning workers.
Imran Ahmed, expatriate minister of Welfare and Overseas Employment, member of the committee chaired by President Anisul Islam Mahmud. Ali Ashraf, Moazzem Hossain Ratan, Ayesha Ferdous and Pankaj Nath attended the meeting.
