Sheikh Zahid, 50, has been released after serving 20 years in prison on trumped-up charges of killing his wife and children. He was released from the Khulna District Jail on Monday night. Omar Farooq said.
Zahid was sentenced to death on June 25, 2000 for killing his wife and one and a half year old daughter. Since then, he has been on death row for 20 years in a prison condom cell.
But since the accusations were not proven, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court acquitted Zahid on August 25. From there, his release order was sent to the Bagerhat court. Instructions reached Khulna jail on Monday, Super Omar Farooq said.
After his release, Zahid said he wanted to die at all times in the condom cell. But I never thought that one day they would release me. He thanked Allah Almighty for his release and thanked those who cooperated for his release.
In 1994, Zahid Sheikh, son of Ilias Sheikh of Narikeli Chandpur in Rupsha Upazila of Khulna, married Rahima, daughter of Moin Uddin of Uttarpara from Fakirhat Police Station in Bagerhat. On the afternoon of January 17, 1997, Rahima’s mother, Anjira Begum, found Rahima’s body with her baby under a kantha and a blanket on the bed.
Rahima’s father, Moin Uddin, filed a murder case with the Fakirhat police station the next day. In the case, on June 25, 2000, the Bagerhat District and Session Court sentenced the defendant Zahid to death. After hearing the transfer of death and the appeal, the Superior Court confirmed the death sentence on July 31, 2004. However, after hearing the appeal on August 25, the highest court in the country acquitted him.
