Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader

The Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, has asked all those involved in transport throughout the country to operate buses and minibuses in accordance with the rules and conditions of public interest. At the same time, it has issued a severe warning to comply with hygiene rules even if the fare is introduced before the coronavirus outbreak in public transport.

He made the call at an exchange meeting with officials from the Dhaka Transportation Coordinating Authority (DTCA) on Tuesday. Obaidul Quader joined the meeting via video conference.

At the time, the bridge minister said: ‘Legal action will be taken if health rules are not followed. Many drive according to transport regulations. Even in Corona, many have followed the rules. But legal action will be taken against some carriers who do not follow the government’s instructions.

The Secretary General of the Awami League said: ‘I am requesting all those involved in transportation across the country to operate buses and minibuses in the public interest, while abiding by these rules or conditions. I ask the law enforcement agencies, especially the DMP, the highway police, the district police and the relevant district administration, to be actively involved in this regard.

Regarding the return of the previous rate, the Minister of Roads said: ‘As of today, the public transport crown has returned to the previous rate instead of the adjusted rate for tomorrow. In the public interest and in the interest of passengers, I seek the cooperation of all stakeholders, including transportation owners and workers, to implement this government decision. All persons involved in public transport, including passengers, must wear a mandatory mask when riding public transport.

He said: ‘The more seats, the more passengers. This means that standing passengers cannot be carried. Soapy water or hand sanitizer should be kept. In addition, at the beginning and end of the trip, the transport must be well disinfected. There is a provision to display the list of government approved fares on each bus. I ask the BRTA and the homeowners association to implement this provision.

After the bus owners’ association decided to return to the previously fixed rate as of today, the BRTA issued a notice urging them to execute the transport in accordance with the conditions. It has also been said that action will be taken in case of deviation. Passengers, drivers, supervisors, assistant drivers, ticket sellers, and all stakeholders must wear masks. Soap water or hand sanitizer should be provided for hand washing. Passengers that exceed the number of seats cannot be transported. The conditions are also given to disinfect the vehicle at the beginning and end of each trip. The Minister of Road Transport and Bridges, Obaidul Quader, has said that he will give the necessary instructions to BRTA to intensify regular activities against vehicles that violate the law.
