The funeral of former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee will be held with full military honors on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Indian media reports, the funeral of the country’s former president will be completed this afternoon.

He died on Monday after undergoing surgery to remove blood clots in the brain and later a coronavirus infection. He was 74 years old. His funeral will be held at the Lodi Road crematorium.

A statement from the Defense Ministry said that Pranab Mukherjee’s body was interred at his official residence at 10 Rajaji Marg in Delhi from 9.15 am to 10.50 am.

Indian President Ramnath Kobind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid their last respects by visiting the former president’s residence and placing a wreath on his portrait.

After the president and prime minister, other ministers and officials paid their last respects to the former president. Among them were Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla, Defense Chief of Staff General Bipin Rawat and the heads of the three armies.

Apart from government officials, the general public had an hour to pay their last respects to the former president and veteran politician of India.

The ministry also said that the former president’s body would be transported in a car instead of an artillery vehicle in accordance with the protocol on Covid-19.

Earlier, the Indian government declared seven days of state mourning to pay tribute to Pranab Mukherjee. A seven-day state mourning is observed from August 31 to September 6 for this high-ranking statesman, who has received the highest civilian award in the country and is loved by people from all walks of life, regardless of his party affiliation.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter. His wife died in 2015.
