Several Saudi defense officials have been fired. It is known that among them are two members of the country’s royal family.
An order signed by Saudi King Salman said that Prince Fahad bin Turki, a commander of the Saudi-led forces fighting in Yemen, had been relieved of his post. Meanwhile, his son Abdul Aziz bin Fahad has also been removed from the post of Lieutenant Governor.
Two members of the Saudi royal family and four other officials are known to be investigated by the Defense Ministry for suspicious transactions.
The king’s son, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, considered the undeclared ruler of Saudi Arabia, is waging a campaign against alleged corruption within the government.
But critics say Mohammed bin Salman is ordering the arrest of high-profile individuals to remove obstacles to retaining power.
Earlier this year, the Wall Street Journal reported that three senior members of the royal family, including the king’s younger brother, Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz and former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, had been arrested.
However, the most talked about incident took place in 2016 when many members of the royal family, ministers and businessmen were detained at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh.
Most of them were later released in a deal to pay £ 107.6 billion to the Saudi state.
Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 35, who came to power in 2016, has been hailed around the world for bringing some economic and social reforms to the conservative country of Saudi Arabia.
However, he has to face several scandals. These include the 2016 murder of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul and the alleged murder of a former Saudi intelligence officer in Canada.
He has also been criticized for continuing the war in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is backing pro-government forces. Although the ban on women driving has been lifted, she has also been criticized for misbehaving with women’s rights activists.
