False accusations of killing his wife and children have been hidden for 20 years. The open sky was not seen. I did not touch the sweet sun, I did not breathe the open air. There was also the death penalty. The executioner could pull the rope at any time. But the call of religion moves in the air! Therefore, another higher court overturned a court verdict even as the last dismissal was announced. Sheikh Zahid (50), a prominent Khulna prisoner, finally saw the light of the free world from that condom cell inside the prison.
Sheikh Zahid was released from the Khulna District Jail at 7.25pm on Monday. At that time, his family members were overwhelmed with emotion when they found him.
However, even though 20 precious years of his life have been wasted without any guilt, Sheikh Zahid no longer blames anyone or wants to punish anyone. He wants to spend the rest of his life worshiping Allah.
On Monday afternoon, Sheikh Zahid’s release order arrived at the Khulna District Jail from the Bagerhat court and the release process began. The superintendent of the Khulna District Jail confirmed that Sheikh Zahid was released in the evening after receiving instructions from the court. Omar Farooq.
He said that Zahid Sheikh was sentenced to death on June 25, 2000 for killing his wife and one and a half year old daughter. Since then, he has been on death row for 20 years in a prison condom cell. However, the Appeals Chamber of the Supreme Court acquitted Sheikh Zahid on August 25, who was sentenced to death for not having proven the case. The Supreme Court sent its acquittal order to the Bagerhat court. He also said he was released after instructions reached Khulna jail on Monday.
Meanwhile, upon the news of Sheikh Zahid’s release after 20 years, his relatives had already positioned themselves in front of the main gate of the district jail. His uncle, Sheikh Ashrafuzzaman, his brothers-in-law Azizur Rahman and Abdus Salam and his younger sister were present at the time.
After his release, Sheikh Zahid said that in the hanging condom cell, he wished for death at all times. I never thought they would ever set me free He thanked Allah Almighty for his release and expressed his gratitude to the prison authorities who cooperated for his release. After his release, he was taken to his sister’s home in the Miapara area of the Khulna metropolis.
Zahid’s brother-in-law, Azizur Rahman, said at the jail gate that when a case on Zahid’s name was first presented at the Fakirhat Police Station under the Violence Against Women Act, the then investigating officer demanded a 50,000 taka bribe to Zahid’s family. He demanded that the government make arrangements for Zahid to eat for the rest of his life, as 20 years were in vain.
By the way, in 1994, Zahid Sheikh, son of Ilias Sheikh from Narikeli Chandpur in Rupsha Upazila of Khulna, married Rahima, daughter of Moin Uddin of Uttar Para from Fakirhat Police Station in Bagerhat. Zahid Sheikh used to live in his father-in-law’s house. Later a daughter was born in his family. His name is Reshma Khatun. The couple began living in a makeshift house 500 meters from Rahima’s father’s house on January 15, 1996, three months before the murder. On the afternoon of January 17, Rahima’s mother, Anjira Begum, saw her daughter’s door wet. Unable to respond by shouting from outside, he entered and found Rahima’s body with the baby under the kantha and blanket on the bed. Rahima’s father, Moin Uddin, filed a murder case with the Fakirhat police station the next day. The police filed a charge sheet in the case on November 19, 1996. Previously, Zahid surrendered to the court on January 16 of that year.
Three years after the murder, on June 25, 2000, the Bagerhat district and session judge sentenced Sheikh Zahid to death. He appealed against the verdict on September 2 of that year. As such, the defendant Zahid Sheikh was in the condom cell for 20 years. The Superior Court confirmed his death sentence on July 31, 2004, after hearing the death remission and the prison appeal. On December 29 of that year, the defendant Zahid Sheikh filed an appeal in the Appeals Chamber against the judgment of the High Court. The country’s highest court ruled on August 25 after hearing the appeal.
Meanwhile, Akram Hossain Sheikh, Zahid Sheikh’s uncle, an innocent young man who was acquitted after 20 long years, lamented: “Who will give back Zahid’s 20 years of life?” Who will answer? Who will take responsibility for Zahid, motherless and defenseless?
He said that while Zahid was in jail, his father Elias Sheikh suffered a heart attack and his mother Hamida Begum died of pain. He demanded exemplary punishment for those who ruined Zahid’s life by conducting a proper investigation into the incident.
