The High Court has suspended proceedings in a libel suit brought by the state labor and employment minister, Begum Mannujan Sufian, against historian Professor Muntasir Mamun for 50 million rupees.

Justice Md. Ruhul Quddus High Court and Judge Kazi Ibadat Hossain approved the order on Monday. The order came from a request submitted by Muntasir Mamun. Lawyer AK Rashedul Haque was the petitioner’s lawyer.

The book ‘Bangladesh Charcha / 3’ edited by Muntasir Mamun was published in February 2005. The author of the book. In Abu Bakar Siddiqui’s article titled ‘Daulatpur in the Liberation War: A Survey’, Mannujan Sufian’s father’s name, ‘Dead Moslem Bawali’ is at number 36 on the list of members of the Peace Committee. After this came to light, on July 1, 2016, Mannujan Sufian sent a legal notice to Muntasir Mamun. Muntasir Mamun responded to this notice. Even then, on July 19 of the same year, Mannujan Sufian sent a legal notice to Muntasir Mamun. The notice asked for an apology and asked for details about the author Abubakar Siddiqui. But Muntasir Mamun did not agree with this. Later, on February 13, 2019, Mannujan Sufian filed a defamation lawsuit against four individuals, including Muntasir Mamun, in the Dhaka Third District Judge Court seeking compensation of Rs 50 million Tk.

On July 22 of the same year, Muntasir Mamun approached the Court of Judges to have the case annulled. But on January 23 of this year, the court rejected the request. Muntasir Mamun filed an appeal with the Superior Court on August 28 against the dismissal order. The hearing of the case postponed. At the same time, the court issued a rule asking why the order dismissing Muntasir Mamun’s application should not be declared illegal.
