The United States Air Force has accused two Russian fighter jets of blocking “in an unsafe and unprofessional manner” the path of a US long-range bomber.
The US Air Force, stationed in Europe, said in a statement that two Russian Su-27 fighter jets intercepted a US B-52 bomber in international waters off the Black Sea on August 27. The attacker struck shortly after noon in front of a US military base. The attacker struck shortly after noon in front of a US military base.
The United States Air Force said in a statement that the Russian pilots flew within 100 feet of the B-52 at the same altitude, revealing their amateur behavior.
The statement quoted Gen. Jeff Harrizian, a commander of the United States Air Force stationed in Europe, as saying that such behavior “increases the risk of a mid-air collision, which is against international aviation law.”
Earlier, Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Friday that two of its Su-27s had intercepted a US B-52 bomber in the Black Sea. The Russian Defense Ministry said the plane had been diverted from a safe distance to prevent it from entering Russian airspace.
