Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevl ুত t ভ avu োগ o ্ল lu has said that Greece’s plans to raise the water level in the Ionian Sea could lead to war.
Mevlut said that raising Greece’s water level in the sea from six nautical miles to 12 nautical miles could lead to a war between the two countries.
On Saturday, Turkey’s foreign minister warned Greece that it could not increase the water limit to 12 miles. Tensions with Greece and Turkey have recently escalated over oil and gas exploration in the Mediterranean. Meanwhile, this move by Athens has created new tensions.
A Greek newspaper quoted Prime Minister Kryakos Mitsotakis as saying that the Greek government planned to introduce a bill to double the territorial waters facing Italy in the Ionian Sea. Greece will expand its territorial waters to other maritime areas in the future.
France directly supports Greece in the eastern Mediterranean. In this context, the Turkish chancellor said that France is playing with the European leadership. France wants to build security forces against the European Union and NATO.
