The Minister of State for Maritime Transport, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, said this in Gopalganj on Saturday.
After paying tribute at the tomb of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara, he told reporters: “Work on the Padma Bridge is underway. You know that due to excessive currents we cannot lift the sections of the Padma Bridge. As a ferry capsized yesterday due to strong currents, it was not possible to catch it.
“So we fear that if the traffic is light at night, if the ferry is running, that danger could happen at any moment.”
He thinks that the safety of the Padma Bridge is more important than the temporary suffering of the people if it is closed again.
Noting that 160 million people in the country are waiting for the Padma Bridge, he said: “We do not want the activities of the Padma Bridge to be interrupted or for the Padma Bridge to be damaged in any way due to our whims or weaknesses.”
In the morning, the minister of state paid tribute at the tomb of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara.
Later, he recited the Holy Fateha and offered special prayers for the forgiveness of the souls of Bangabandhu and the martyrs of August 15.
