The family of Khaleda Zia, president of the BNP, requested the permanent release of the Ministry of the Interior to the Ministry of Justice. Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan confirmed that he had received the request. He told reporters that the request has been sent to the Justice Ministry for scrutiny. The next decision will be made after judging and analyzing the legal aspects.
Khaleda Zia, who was convicted in two corruption cases, was temporarily released on March 25. She was free for six months. This period will end on September 25. Previously, on behalf of the family, Brother Shamim Eskander submitted the application on Tuesday.
He was imprisoned for more than two years in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases. Following the family’s statement, the government suspended Khaleda Zia’s sentence for six months and released her on March 25.
In the petition, it was mentioned that Khaleda Zia’s medical treatment could not be confirmed due to the Corona disaster and an examination of her physical illness could not be performed to ensure her proper treatment. The petition further said that, in the meantime, public transportation and businesses, including offices and courts, which had been halted due to the coronavirus, have started to return to normal. This has created an opportunity for the treatment of the ill Khaleda Zia and the related physical examination.
Khaleda Zia’s permanent release has been requested taking into account her age, physical illness and humanitarian aspects.
