Ashura fast : Narrated ‘Abdullah ibn’ Abbas: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, what is it? They said it was a good day. On this day, Allah saved the Children of Israel from the clutches of their enemies. So Musa (AS) observed the fast. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: I deserve more to follow Musa (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) than you. Then he fasted and ordered to fast ”. (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 185)
Musnad Ahmad narrates: “This is the day that Noah’s ark (peace be upon him) was fixed on Mount Judi, so Noah (peace be upon him) fasted that day in gratitude to Allah.” (Hadith: 617)
The practice of Ashura fasting was prevalent in ignorant society even before the advent of Islam. It is narrated on the authority of Ayesha (may Allaah be pleased with her) that she said: “People of the age of ignorance used to fast on the day of Ashura.” (Tuhfatul Ashraf, Hadith: 12638)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Regarding fasting on the day of Ashura, I hope that Allaah forgives the sins of the previous year.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 198)
Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allaah be pleased with him) narrated: “When the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) fasted Ashura and instructed (others) to fast. The people said: O Messenger of Allah! This is a day that Jews and Christians hold in high regard and respect. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “When this day comes next year, we will also fast on the ninth day, Insha’Allah.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 1948)
