Mahbubul Islam, a resident of Dhaka Central Jail, said 26-year-old Mintu Mia suffered from mental problems and was rescued on Saturday afternoon.
Mintu Mia, the defendant in the drug case, was admitted to the hospital on Friday afternoon under jail supervision after he developed shortness of breath.
Rashid Un Nabi, director of Mitford Hospital, told bdnews24.com that Mintu had fled on Saturday morning.
He said: “Mintu Mia was admitted yesterday (Friday) afternoon. Speaking of going to the bathroom in the morning, he ran away. It was guarded by two guards. They said they couldn’t find Mintu Mia. “
Dhaka Jail Superintendent Iqbal Kabir Chowdhury also said that three jail guards were suspended in connection with the escape of the accused.
Later, Jor Mahbubul said, Mintu was rescued from the Babubazar bridge area.
“Immediately after his escape, the jail took special measures to rescue him. According to him, people were recruited in different places. They later found him wandering near the Babubazar bridge.”
Mintu Mia also had a mental illness, the district chief said, adding: “We thought she couldn’t escape.”
The prison authorities have brought a case to the Kotwali Police Station in connection with the escape.
