The sentence of BNP President Khaleda Zia has been suspended and a request has been submitted for her permanent release. The application filed with the Interior Ministry on August 25 also asked for permission for her advanced treatment. A ministry source told Kaler Kanth that Khaleda Zia’s brother, Shamim Eskander, had signed the petition.

When asked, Interior Minister Asaduzzaman Khan told Kaler Kantha on Friday evening: “We have received a request from Khaleda Zia’s family to stay the sentence. However, the request for an opinion will be sent to the Ministry. A decision will then be made on it, however, Khaleda Zia’s brother, Shamim Eskander, declined to comment.

The government had previously suspended Khaleda Zia’s sentence for six months at the request of her family and she was released on the condition that she be released on March 25. It will complete six months on September 25. She has been in jail for more than two years since February 8, 2016 in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust corruption cases.

In the petition, it was mentioned that BNP President Khaleda Zia’s medical treatment could not be confirmed due to the Corona disaster and a physical examination could not be performed to ensure her proper treatment.

The petition further said that, in the meantime, public transportation and businesses, including offices and courts, which had been halted due to the coronavirus, have started to return to normal. This has created an opportunity for Khaleda Zia’s medical treatment and related physical examination.
At the end of the petition, it was mentioned that “the permanent release of Khaleda Zia was requested considering her age, physical illness and humanitarian considerations.”

Khaleda Zia has been receiving treatment at ‘Firoza’ in Gulshan for the past six months as a condition of her release. She did not go abroad for advanced treatment. She made no political statements or statements after her temporary release. She had no such formal meeting.
