An old man named Shamsul Haque Shamshu (65) married an eighth grade student in Lalmai Upazila de Comilla. Police arrested the girl’s mother in connection with the incident.

It is known that on May 10, Shamsul Haque Shamshu married the girl with a dowry of Tk 5 lakh and a usul of Tk 1 lakh. The student’s father used to come and go to Dhaka to care for his family due to his work. He used to ride the Shamsul Haque rickshaw when he came to school from the fifth class. At this time a love story developed between them.
Locals said the UP president called the bride and groom to the Union Parishad office on May 11, as there was a stir in the area over the issue. When the groom Shamsul Haque was questioned, he said, “I will marry him with a dowry of Tk 5 lakh and Tk 1 lakh.” At that time, Shamsul Haque showed the marriage certificate and the bride’s birth certificate.
Shamsul Haque’s two daughters and three sons, a son and a daughter, are married. The bride is the second of four brothers. Her older sister is not yet married. There are two younger brothers.

The girl’s father said, “Shamsu used to do my housework. I work for a private company in Dhaka. I used to do different things in my family. I trusted him a lot. He convinced my daughter to marry him.
