On January 17 of this year, four illegal deer hunters and crab poachers were arrested at the Sharankhola police station in Bagerhat. Yusuf Sheikh, 35, the son of Haque Sheikh and the three sons of Musulli A. from the village of Banshtala in Mongla upazila in Bagerhat. The Forest Department filed a case against Hamid Musulli (35), Hanif Musulli (33) and Asad Musulli (30). Three and a half months after the incident, on May 1, the thieves filed a counter-case at the Sharankhola police station alleging beatings against the rangers.
Enamul Haque, Officer of the East Sundarbans Chandpai (ACF) Range, said that on January 18, rangers at the Tambalbunia patrol outpost at the Dhansagar station in the range saw two dinghy boats in the area Kalamula from the forest during a regular patrol. Rangers detained the four people and searched the two boats and captured deer traps, prohibited crabs, and some crabs. At that time, the poachers saw the situation as strange and attacked the forest guards and fled into the forest. Rangers Abul Bashar and Motaleb Hossain were seriously injured in the attack.
Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of the Tambalbunia patrol outpost, presented a case against four people at the Sharankhola police station on January 18. Case No. 5, Sections 332, 353, 307, 369, 427, 508 Criminal Court.
On the other hand, Sohrab Hossain from the Mithakhali village in Mongla upazila presented a contrary case at the Sharankhola police station on behalf of the accused. Mizanur Rahman, BM Abul Bashar and Motaleb Hossain, OC of the Tambalbunia patrol outpost, were charged in the case.
The investigating officer (IO) of both cases, SI Swapan Kumar of the Sharankhola police station, said that a charge sheet had been filed against the accused in court, as the case presented by the forest department was proven in the investigation. The other case is under investigation. Sharankhola Police Station Officer in Charge (OC) SK Abdullah Al Saeed said the case was shelved after he came with a medical certificate and described the incident.
