Another operator, Robi Axiata, described the move by mobile phone operator Grameenphone as an “example of a price war.” Robi’s claim that the Grameenphone market-based move comes as a corporate social responsibility or a CSR twist is upsetting the balance of competition.
The allegations were made by Robi at a digital press conference on Monday, detailing the focus of the coronavirus outbreak.
Robi’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director Mahtab Uddin Ahmed gave details. Robi’s Corporate and Regulatory Director Shahed Alam and other administrative staff from the company were present at the time.
In a statement after the press conference, Robi said he was committed to supporting all members of society in the fight against the coronavirus. Robi’s clear position is that there is no opportunity to combine market-oriented measures with business-related measures. However, the Grameenphone name is not mentioned anywhere. Instead, it is known as “market leader”. Grameenphone is the ‘market leader’ with 6 crore and a half subscribers in the country. Robi has 4 million 96-lakh subscribers.
Grameenphone announced on May 9 that they are offering 100 million free minutes to 10 million subscribers. They will provide 30 gigabytes (GB) of internet per month for six months to 25,000 Corona doctors prescribed by the Department of Health for six months. For all of their clients (around Rs 8 and a half million), they are offering the opportunity to speak at a call rate of 48 paisa per minute from 8 am to 12 noon. The company has taken a Tk 10 crok security loan program or credit scheme for affected retailers.
Robi Mahtab Uddin said Robi has already spent Tk 160 million rupees (Tk 90 million rupees on CSR and sustainable measures and the remaining Tk 80 million rupees on marketing-related measures) to tackle Corona combining market and sustainable measures . But according to him, the amount of money is not a big deal, but Robi is committed to supporting people until the end of this epidemic.
Robi said that although two problems are playing an important role in the fight against the coronavirus. But two things work in two ways. Therefore, the company is not willing to look at it one by one. The question of business decision is related to measures related to the market. But sustainable measures are only considered in society.
Speaking at the press conference, Mahtab Uddin said that although daily earnings have been reduced by Tk 4 crore, Robi has reduced the price of data on certain packages by 60 percent. Talking or talking has also been reduced as much as possible.
Robi’s CEO emphasized the need to ensure healthy competition to protect younger competitors from aggressive actions by market leaders. Because, he thinks, the market leader is upsetting the balance of competition by presenting his market-based move on the CSR turn.
Mahtab was surprised that the regulatory body has approved the market leader’s offer of 30GB of data for just Rs 1 for potential clients such as medical professionals. He complained that the market leader was seizing the Kovid-19 opportunity. He cited the market leader’s offer as an excellent example of a price war.
Robi also offers 10 free minutes of talk time and 50MB of data for those who used to recharge regularly but are unable to do so due to the crown crisis. In addition to this, Robi has adopted a comprehensive plan that includes food supply, financial assistance, and health insurance for sales and distribution employees.
Robi’s CEO said that if regulators did not take steps to keep the market leader running smoothly, they would take advantage of the Covid-19 crisis to further their business goals.
At the press conference it was reported that Robi will distribute food to 10,000 families in remote areas of the country in collaboration with the Army Welfare Organization. Disinfection booths will be installed in public places in Dhaka and Chittagong.
In this regard, the Head of External Communications of Grameenphone, Muhammad Hasan, said: “Now it is more necessary to support the country in this terrible crisis and everyone must be responsible for this.” It is sad that such comments have been made. But we applaud the many enthusiastic introductions to tackle Kovid-19 ‘.
