Workers at several garment factories in Gazipur went on strike on Monday to demand a 100 percent wage subsidy. Although the industrial police came to the scene and took control of the situation, the workers were dissatisfied. Authorities announced a vacation at a DBL Group clothing factory in the city’s Kashimpur.
Gazipur industrial police superintendent of police Sushant Sarkar said the factory authorities had decided to pay 80 percent of workers’ wages in factories that were closed during the shutdown. That is why the workers have protested.
According to sources, Jinnat Garment of the DBL group (Dulal Brothers Limited) is located in the Barenda area of Kashimpur, in the Gazipur metropolis. Around 13,000 workers work there. Workers have been protesting for the past few days demanding 100 percent wages. Although they joined the factory on Monday morning, the workers went on strike and began protesting at around 9 am. At one point they took up a position in front of the factory.
When the authorities did not accept the demands outside of the government’s decision, some agitated workers attacked the factory. Police with riot gear stormed a demonstration on Friday, taking hundreds of protesters out by truck. Meanwhile, authorities announced a two-day holiday at the factory to keep the situation under control.
Gazipur industrial police inspector Islam Hossain said workers at a shoe factory in the Konabari area went on strike on Monday morning demanding the same.
Workers at the Far East knitting and dyeing factory in the rural energy area of Kaliakair also went on strike from Monday morning until afternoon.
