Employees of stores in New Market, Gauchia and Chandni Chowk Market in the capital staged a protest in front of the market demanding payment of their arrears. The incident took place on Sunday morning in front of the markets on Mirpur Road.

Sam Qayyum, an officer in charge of the new market police (OC), told NTV Online on Sunday afternoon. He said: ‘Employees gathered today in front of the market to demand wage arrears. That will be resolved overnight.

Workers from all the surrounding markets, including Newmarket, Gaochia and Chandni Chowk, had gathered there since this morning, Sam Qayyum said. They met to find out why the market would not open, how to collect or what would happen to the arrears. At one point, when they took a position on the market, we talked to the owners. ‘

The officer-in-charge said: “I have informed the employers about the delays in the wages of the employees. The owners ensured a solution in this matter. The workers then left the road. Everything will be resolved tonight. However, many Workers have asked that the store remain open. They claim, if the market is not open, they will eat? Who will eat? However, there is nothing to do. Corona is not a matter of contempt.

Meanwhile, Jewel Mollah, president of the workers’ union, told UNB that most of the store owners in Gauchia Market had closed their stores without paying their dues. How will workers survive this coronavirus epidemic?

Pointing to the members of the market owners, Jewel Mollah said: “Now nobody is thinking about the workers.”

Mentioning that store owners did not pay their fees, protesting market workers complained that even though the government allowed the stores to remain open from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday, some market owners decided to close their stores.

The protesting workers blocked the Mirpur road in front of the Gauchia market around 12 noon demanding wage arrears and protested until 1:15 p.m.

On May 10, the government decided to keep the store open on a limited scale. After the government’s announcement, merchants announced their decision not to open the capital’s main shopping malls, such as the Bashundhara Shopping Complex, Jamuna Future Park, and several large clothing stores in Mirpur. Traders also decided to close New Market, Gauchia, and Chandni Chowk.

In this regard, the president of the Chandni Chowk Business Forum on Saturday night. Nizam Uddin told NTV Online: “We, the merchants of 11 New Market, have decided not to keep the market open.” Corona could be further extended if the market is left open. It is not the case that we will not be attacked. We made this decision after meeting the owners of 11 stores in the area. The new market, Gauchia, Chandni Chowk, Chishtia Market, Dhanmondi Hawker Market and Eastern Mallika will be closed.

However, Helal Uddin, president of the Bangladesh Store Owners Association, told UNB again today: “Considering the current coronavirus situation in the capital, most of the malls and markets are closed, but the Islampur Market in Old Dhaka, Chawkbazar, Keraniganj, Ayesha Market in Jatrabari, Rapa Plaza in Dhanmondi, Dhaka New Super Market and Nagar The stores in the road area will reopen from Sunday to the authorities. “

However, most of the capital’s malls and markets, including the busiest market in Gulistan, Bangabazar, Aziz Super Market in Shahbag, Polwell Market in Puran Paltan and Mirpur, will remain closed until Eid, Helal Uddin said.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on Thursday urged city dwellers to finalize their Eid purchases at the market located two kilometers from their respective areas, maintaining the schedule and hygiene standards announced by the government. . In addition, the DMP has ordered to install tunnels or automatic disinfection chambers at the entrances of each shopping center and to have separate temperature measurement arrangements in each store.
