The store owners association decided to close New Market, Anarkali and Mouchak Market, Nurjahan Super Market, New Nurjahan Market and Haji Siddique Mansion Reza Market in the capital despite instructions. About 95 percent of shopping malls across the country, including the capital, will remain closed due to fear of increased corona infection.

Helal Uddin, president of the Bangladesh Store Owners Association, told the media on Saturday.

Helal Uddin said that about 95 percent of shopping centers across the country would remain closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Other stores are also expected to remain closed to avoid risk.

Markets and shopping malls in the capital have been closed for more than a month due to the coronavirus. After the government’s decision to open the market on May 4, cleanup activities began in the capital’s New Market. Preparations are seen to open up the market. However, after reviewing the current situation, the Dhaka New Market Entrepreneurs Association decided to close the market.

Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, president of the Bashundhara Group, was the first to announce the closure of the Bashundhara City shopping center, as there was a risk of spreading the coronavirus from shopping centers. After that, the authorities announced the closure of 11 major markets, including Jamuna Future Park, New Market, Gauchia, Chandni Chowk.

In addition, outside Dhaka, merchants have announced to close shopping malls in almost every city in the district, including Sylhet, Chittagong Comilla, Khulna and Rajshahi.

On the other hand, experts say that if shopping malls open to buy before Eid, the crowd will increase. And from this crowd, a large number of people can become infected with the corona virus.

Not only that, according to a survey by the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD), 93 percent of the country’s population does not want shopping malls to open. They believe that opening a mall will increase the risk of corona infection.
