Two young Rohingya were killed in a ‘shootout’ with police in Teknaf upazila from Cox’s Bazar. The dead are: Nur Mohammad (26) and Md. Rafiq (26).
The shooting took place in the Ulubania border area of the Huaikyong Union in the upazila on Saturday morning.
Police claimed that Nur Mohammad and Rafiq were drug dealers. They were residents of the Thaingkhali Rohingya camp in Ukhia. Weapons and yaba were recovered from the site.
Teknaf OC Pradeep Kumar Das police station said they were shot by Rohingya drug traffickers when a police team led by them reached the Ulubania area. Two Rohingyas were shot when the police also shot in self-defense.
They were rescued and taken to the Upazila Health Complex and later to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the doctor on duty declared them dead.
Teknaf Health Complex, emergency physician. Zakaria Mahmud said the police brought in two Rohingya youths who had been shot in the morning. At that time they were transferred to Cox’s Bazar. Two policemen were injured in the incident.
