BGBA President Kazi Iftekhar Hossain wrote a letter to the chief secretary in the prime minister’s office on Tuesday demanding the opening of a clothing factory. He said that in order to maintain the business of Bangladesh’s main export sector, an urgent plan must be made on how to operate the garment sector on a limited basis in compliance with hygiene standards.
The BGBA said work at the garment buying house and garment factory had been halted due to a one-month shutdown caused by Corona. As a result, millions of garment workers and officials are nearly unemployed. The livelihoods of buying houses and commercial merchants face uncertainty. The organization claims that competing countries in the clothing sector are gradually opening businesses. Apart from that, the demand for some garments is increasing worldwide. If the current supply chain for Bangladesh’s garment sector with North American countries and Europe is not maintained, there is a danger of moving this business to competing countries. Once the supply system breaks, replacing it will be a challenge for Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the leaders of BGMEA and BKMEA, an association of owners of the garment industry, said the process of reopening the closed garment factories has begun. They say the factory could reopen step by step starting April 28 after monitoring for corona infection. In the end, all factories will be open from May 2. The government will assist owners of the garment industry.

Then Sheikh Hasina said about keeping the industrial factory in Gazipur open: “It is an industrial belt, our goal is to keep some establishments open.” Especially those that are export based.
The prime minister said: “Production should continue even if it is at a limited stage ensuring closure.” We need to make sure this is done. For this, we have to work according to the conditions of the World Health Organization. He added: ‘The month of Ramadan is yet to come. We cannot keep everyone sitting. Some factories must be kept open. However, not everyone can meet and arrangements must be made to meet them on a limited basis safely.
After widespread criticism, BGMEA and BKMEA announced in a joint statement on April 8 that the garment factory would be closed until April 14 according to government directive to deal with Corona. Later, BGMEA and BKMEA decided to close the factory until April 25 if the license announced by the government was extended.
