The government decided to open stores and malls throughout the country, including the capital. Merchants have suffered greatly as the government decided to keep shops and malls open on a limited scale after half of the fast has passed in compliance with health regulations.
Talking to concerned people, it became known that as soon as shopping malls, markets, and stores open, conditions must be followed with government instructions. The condition includes compliance with hygiene standards. In other years, the market is open all night, but this year it has to be closed at four in the afternoon. Hand sanitizers should be organized for both buyers and sellers. This requires additional capital. What would not have been necessary on other occasions.
According to research, most of the markets, bazaars and shopping centers in the capital have less space in front and behind. As a result, there is no market for the amount of space required to maintain social distance in accordance with government hygiene guidelines. On the other hand, there are doubts about whether buyers will follow hygiene rules during Eid. As a result, merchants are concerned about opening markets or stores or shopping malls in compliance with the conditions given by the government.
On the other hand, employees will have to pay a salary bonus as soon as they open a business. Merchants are also concerned if there will be enough sales if they open a store or mall or market with only 15 days Eid. If you don’t have enough sales to pay the employee salary bonus, with what? Where can you find buyer’s desired products during Eid? There are also concerns about how to bring it. The store employees are also not in Dhaka. They have gone home to town. How will these employees return to work when public transportation closes? Merchants are also concerned with ways to resolve these complications. As a result, operators are concerned about opening a business on May 10, they said.
Concerned merchants said that due to the crown, crowds in the capital have dwindled, many have left the capital and gone to villages. Many of those who are there will not come to the market for fear of Corona. Many people across the country, including the capital, have lost their jobs. After being unemployed for a long time, the accumulated capital was also depleted. What to do to buy Eid? Even if the business opens, there will be no buyer meeting or buy and sell as expected. And if sales are not as expected, there will be no profit.
When asked about this, Dilip, president of Gazi Super Market in the capital, said that there is only one door in the market. Buyers and sellers have to enter and exit the market through this door. Also, there is no opportunity for more than two shoppers to be in a store at the store location. How to follow the hygiene rules there? How to protect social distance? On the other hand, buyers will want exceptional products during Eid. What is the benefit of opening a store if you cannot afford it? We still don’t know where the supply of these fashion products will come from during Eid.
Babu, president of Gauchia Market in the capital, said the two stores in the market opened on Tuesday (May 5) on a trial basis. There was no trade throughout the day. No buyers came. On the other hand, there are no employees to run the store. Where can I find employees to manage a market, a store or a mall when it is fully open? Explaining the reason, he said that as the market was closed, employees had gone home and public transportation was also closed. How will they come? And how do I run a store or business if they don’t come?
Sarwar Hossain, owner of Laboni Sari Bitan, a beekeeper in the capital, said that the Eid sale started in full swing after Shabe Barat. This year is an exception. Shabe has been cited, Roger has also been out for 10 days. 15 fasts will come and go on May 10. What will I sell in the remaining 15 days and what will I do? If they are not business, how do I pay for store costs and employee bonuses? Employees will apply for a bonus when joining the job.
Helal Uddin, president of the Bangladesh Store Owners Association, said: “We will open a limited number of markets, shopping malls and stores as of May 10 according to government directives.” We are thinking and planning how to do it. Talk to market presidents and secretaries general. We have to accept reality. He said that the capital Dhaka, Narayanganj and Gazipur are Corona’s hot spots. We have to plan separately for these three districts taking into account the reality. The integrated initiative is sufficient for the rest of the districts.
In response to another question, Helaluddin said that as public transportation is closed, the store’s employees are unsure of returning to their workplaces, including the capital. Discussions are also taking place with government policy makers on how to overcome it. We also have a problem with the employee salary bonus. We are talking to those interested.
It is worth noting that stores and malls will remain open from May 10 with a limited range ahead of Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr by facilitating the ban on public movement. On Monday (May 4), the Cabinet Division issued orders to the Interior Ministry, the Ministry of Commerce and the police administration to implement the directive. The directive instructed to keep stores and shopping malls open in accordance with hygiene standards.
According to the directive, considering the conditional situation, several districts and upazilas in the country have requested to make arrangements to open businesses, stores, shopping centers and other functions internally since May 10. However, in this case, communication and inter-upazila movement must be strictly controlled.
The order also stated that hat bazaars, business centers, stores and shopping malls should be restricted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. At the same time, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare must take precautions, including the use of hand sanitizer when entering all shopping malls.
