9 cases, 448 defendants in burning bus on Election Day

During the by-elections in Dhaka-17, nine cases were recorded against BNP leaders and activists for burning buses and obstructing police work in different parts of the capital.

Of these, two cases have been registered at Motijheel Police Station, two at Shahbagh Police Station, two at Paltan Police Station and one at Kalabagan, Bhatara and Bangshal Police Station. This information has been confirmed by Walid Hossain, Deputy Commissioner of the Public Relations and Media Department of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. He said the cases were closed on Thursday and Friday morning.

According to the case statement, the cases have been filed under the Special Powers Act and the Explosives Control Act of 1974. The plaintiff in the case is the police.

448 people have been charged in these cases. 20 people have been arrested. Most of the accused are leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliates. There are also unidentified defendants in these cases.

Among the defendants in the case filed at Motijheel Police Station is the BNP-defeated mayoral candidate Ishraq Hossain in the Dhaka South City elections.

A total of 20 people were arrested on Thursday and Friday. Among them, 1 person has been arrested in Motijheel, 6 in Shahbag, 9 in Paltan, 2 in Bangshal and 2 in Kalabagan.

Incidentally, 9 buses were set on fire in different areas of the capital on Thursday, the Dhaka-17 by-election day. 3 government buses were burned in the fire.

The Awami League claims that anti-independence forces have set the bus on fire. On the other hand, BNP claimed that the bus was set on fire in a pre-planned way and with a purpose. The BNP has no connection to it.
