A court ordered the execution of six people, including Rifat’s wife, Ayesha Siddique Minni, in the much-disputed Rifat Sharif murder case in Barguna. 4 people have been acquitted in the same case. The court also fined each of them 50,000 taka.
The verdict in the case was announced on Wednesday (September 30) around 2:15 pm by Barguna Session and District Judge Md. Ashaduzzaman.
The attorney for the attorney general (PP) Bhuban Chandra Haldar of the Barguna district and the session court confirmed the information.
Those sentenced to death are- Md. Rakibul Hasan alias Rifat Faraji (23), Al Qayyum alias Rabbi Akon (21), Mohaiminul Islam Sifat (19), Rezoan Ali Khan Hridoy alias Tiktak Hridoy (22), Md. Hasan (19) and Ayesha Siddique Minni (19).
In addition, four defendants in the case have been acquitted. Those acquitted are- Md. Musa (22), Rafiul Islam Rabbi (20), Md. Sagar (19) and Kamrul Hasan Saimun (21).
Rakibul Hasan Rifat Faraji, Al Qayyum alias Rabbi Akon, Mohaiminul Islam Sifat, Rezwan Ali Khan Hridoy alias Tiktak Hridoy, Md. Hasan, Rafiul Islam Rabbi, Md. Sagar and Kamrul Islam were present in court during Simon Roy. Among the 10 defendants, Musa runs away and Minni is out on bail. All but Musa confessed to being involved in Rifat’s murder.
It can be mentioned that on June 26, 2019, Rifat Sharif (25) was beaten to death by a crowd of hundreds in front of Barguna Government College. Later, a video of Rifat being hacked to death went viral on Facebook.
The day after the incident, Rifat’s father, Abdul Halim Dulal Sharif, filed a murder case against five or six more unidentified people, mentioning the names of twelve people. On September 1 of that year, the police presented an investigation report in court against 24 people, divided into adults and minors. Charged 10 adults and 14 minors.
On January 1, the Barguna District and Session Court of Judges filed charges against 10 adult defendants in the Rifat murder case. The court then began taking testimony against 10 accused adults since January 8. A total of 8 witnesses testified in the case.
After hearing the arguments of the two parties in the case on September 18, Barguna District and Sessions Judge Md. Asaduzzaman set Wednesday (September 30) for the verdict.
